As some of you may remember, Animated Meat first came to life in 2008 as a way to document some sights that managed to slip through the cracks of most popular travel websites.  You may also remember that the original website was built on Apple's now defunct iWeb.  From there, it migrated over to WordPress where it met an untimely demise at the hands of Russian hackers.  Many of those old, pre-2012 entries have found a new home here in the Before the Now section.  I would consider these posts as my starting place as a writer, probably comparable to a musician's first demo tapes.  They are very rough, but I took them all seriously and wrote each one with passion.  While I would like to believe that I have matured in my abilities as a writer, it is my hope that I carry this same blind passion into all of my new efforts.

Seattle Duck Tour - Originally Published 2009

When I was down and out in Seattle, I used to walk the city from one end to the other for lack of anything else to do.  One of the ubiquitous sights around town were crowds of tourist packed into a 1940’s amphibious landing craft.  They all seemed too happy and self-assured as they rode around and quacked their quackers at folks that were down on their luck like you know who.

Ducks

I vowed that one day, I would return to Seattle like a conquering hero.  As part of my conquest, I too would know the joy of riding around on the Duck Tour.  Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to announce to you that I have lived the dream.

Safeco field

I once had a client who came out to LA for a meeting.  She wanted some recommendations of something she could do that wasn’t touristy.  I told her she could always do some rent a video and do some laundry.  She would not approve of this trip.  It’s about as touristy as anything can get.  Think of it like going to a ballgame.  You’re going to eat a hot dog while you’re there. Enjoy it.

Marina

Dollar for dollar, this tour is the best way to check out the city if you are short on time and want to cover as much ground as possible.  Our captain, the more than capable Phillip Dover managed to swing the seven and a half ton craft all over town in afternoon traffic.

Mai on lake washington

You’ll see all the major sights downtown has to offer including Safeco Field and the Seattle Art Museum.

Gasworks

The coolest part of the trip is that the vessel actually drives into Lake Washington.

Seattle art museum

It was a perfect day and we got some great views of Seattle and the Gasworks Park.
