Like most of America, I spent the weekend exploring the outdoors with a little something called Pokemon Go. Never heard of it? I wrote this blog the other night about how it's going to change all human culture for the good.
My daughter was completely captivated by it. So much so that on Monday night, she insisted that we get out on the trail and look for some Pokemon after dinner. The servers over at Niantic must have gotten pummeled because the app had slowed to a crawl and kept crashing. Five minutes into our walk and it looked like we would have to pack it in and head back to the house.
My wife told my daughter that Pokemon wasn't working and she'd have to use her imagination if she wanted to find any.
And that's exactly what she did. My daughter is holding her finding stick. Whenever we would get close to a Pokemon, it would shake. She would let my wife and I know what we found. At first, she stuck to the Pokemon canon and we found a Pikachu. As the walk progressed, she left the Pokemon Universe behind and managed to find a rainbow pony, an ogre baby, a tree man, and a diamond man.
As a writer, my mind was completely blown. First, I was delighted that my daughter has such an active imagination that she didn't let the limits of technology hold her back from having a good time. Second, as creative types, this is exactly what we want with our work.
We want to be able to create a universe that is so compelling that our readers don't want to leave it. They want to take a piece of it back to their own world. My daughter is probably one of the more successful Pokemon hunters in her neighborhood and she does it with nothing more that a stick and whatever she has between her ears.
I think that one of the ultimate forms of flattery would be some who goes and creates something based off of something that I wrote. This is part of the reason why I refuse to cut corners when it comes to creating. Someone who is willing to give up hours of his or her life to read my work deserves to have the best characters I am able to develop living in the best world I am able to develop.
